The United Nations Blue Book I: The United Nations and Apartheid 1948-1994 (1994)

This publication gives an overview of the United Nations' involvement in the fight against apartheid.
When, on 3 October 1994, President Mandela addressed the United Nations General Assembly, he observed that it was the first time in its 49 years that it had been addressed by a South African head of state drawn from among the African majority. Welcoming the vanquishing of apartheid, President Mandela said: “That historic change has come about not least because of the great efforts in which the United Nations engaged to ensure the suppression of the apartheid crime against humanity. Apartheid, he added, represented the very opposite of all the noble purposes for which the United Nations was established, and in fact "constituted a brazen challenge" to the very existence of the Organization.
