The Military Equation in Northeast Asia (1979) By Stuart E. Johnson and Joseph A. Yager

After examining both the balance of military power in the area and the situations which might call for the use of armed force, the authors conclude that the U.S. military presence in Northeast Asia is excessive and wasteful. The recommendation to make significant reductions in U.S. ground forces in Korea and Japan and to scale down the forward deployment of aircraft carriers is sure to be controversial at a time when public opinion in the United States appears to be inclining toward a halt in the post-Vietnam curtailments.
