The Making of the Second World War (1985) By Anthony P. Adamthwaite
Adamthwaite has concentrated on the causes of the European war up to 1939 rather than the wider global war up to 1941 but he makes that clear in the preface to the book.
He includes 81 documents of British, French, German, Italian and Soviet origin for consideration. The majority of these documents deal with the period 1935 to 1939 but are usefully supported by material dating from 1929 onwards.
Adamthwaite includes an extended introductory essay in six chapters. 2 to 6 each deal with chronological periods extending from 1919 right through to the approach of war in 1939, prefixed by Chapter 1 which introduces the documentary sources relevant to the period and the historiographical issues relating to them. Discussion in the essay's chronological chapters 2 to 6 concentrates on reviewing and assessing recent research.
