History of the Fourth Light Horse Brigade AIF 1914-18 (1953) By G.W. Nutting

The Fourth Light Horse Regiment was formed as the divisional cavalry regiment for the 1st Australian Division in August 1914. The Light Horse was considered unsuitable for the initial operations at Gallipoli but they were deployed without their horses to reinforce the infantry. Its first battle, for which it became legendary, was the Charge of Beersheba. They later were the first allied troops to enter Damascus. While awaiting embarkation for home in 1919 they were recalled to service to quell the Egyptian revolt.
