Robert William (Bob) Connell (b. 1944), sociologist, was the foundation Professor of Sociology at Macquarie University, 1976-1991, before his appointment to the Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard University. A History Honours graduate from the University of Melbourne in 1966, he undertook postgraduate research in the Department of Government, Sydney University. He completed his PhD in 1970 and lectured from 1971-1972. Connell had been a leading student activist against the Vietnam War and published a book of poems on the conflict, Firewinds (1968). He also co-founded the Free U (Sydney Free University), a radical, off-campus movement to change teaching methods and content, particularly in tertiary education. He was Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Flinders University, 1973-1975.
