On February 28, 1947, a North American P-82 Twin Mustang with the name “Betty Jo” completed the longest nonstop flight by a fighter aircraft without aerial refueling by flying from Hickam Army Airfield, Hawaii, to LaGuardia Airport, New York. This flight, made by Lieutenant Colonel Robert E. Thacker and Lieutenant John M. Ard, still stands in the record books today, some 78 years later, and this event also stands as one of the biggest achievements for a piston engine fighter.
